Building a Creative Agency While Still in College
Starting Seven House Creative has been one of those ideas that went from “maybe one day” to something very real, very quickly.
There was no perfect launch date, no moment where I suddenly felt completely prepared, and definitely no point where I knew exactly what I was doing.
I just knew I wanted to build something of my own.
I’ve spent the last few years learning about marketing, branding, social media, content creation, and strategy through school, internships, leadership roles, and projects. Eventually, I realized I didn’t want to wait until graduation to start putting everything I was learning into practice.
So I started Seven House Creative.
And building an agency while still being a college student has already taught me more than I expected.
There Is a Big Difference Between Learning Marketing and Doing Marketing
In a classroom, there is usually a clear assignment.
You get the objective, the requirements, the deadline, and some kind of framework for what success should look like.
Working with a real brand is completely different.
Sometimes the client knows exactly what they want. Sometimes they know something isn’t working but can’t quite explain why. Sometimes the first strategy you create changes once you start digging deeper into the brand.
That is where the real work begins.
Instead of asking, “What would make a good post?” I’ve started asking questions like:
Who are we actually trying to reach?
What should this brand be known for?
Why would someone choose this business over another one?
How should someone feel after interacting with the brand?
What role should social media play in the bigger business?
Those questions have completely changed the way I approach creative work.
A Pretty Feed Is Not a Brand Strategy
This has probably been one of the biggest lessons behind Seven House.
I love beautiful branding. I love typography, color palettes, photography, editorial layouts, and creating content that feels cohesive.
But none of that matters very much if there isn’t a strategy underneath it.
A brand can have the most beautiful Instagram feed in its industry and still struggle to communicate what it actually does.
That is why our process starts before the design.
We look at the audience, positioning, messaging, voice, goals, competitive landscape, and content direction first.
Then the visual identity has something to support.
The goal isn’t just to make a brand look better.
It’s to make the brand make sense.
Building the Business Behind the Creative
One thing I underestimated about starting an agency was how much of it happens away from Canva, content calendars, and creative concepts.
There are proposals to write.
Emails to send.
Calls to prepare for.
Client folders to organize.
Processes to create.
Revisions to manage.
Timelines to keep track of.
And approximately one million tiny decisions that nobody really sees.
Some days I spend more time building the system behind the work than I do creating the work itself.
I’m learning that those systems matter.
Creativity might bring someone through the door, but organization, communication, and reliability are what allow you to actually build a business.
Starting Before I Feel Ready
I think it would have been very easy to tell myself that I should wait.
Wait until I graduate.
Wait until I have more experience.
Wait until the website is perfect.
Wait until I know exactly how every part of the business will work.
But I’m starting to realize that you learn some things only by doing them.
Seven House will probably look different a year from now.
The services might evolve.
The processes will definitely evolve.
My creative style will evolve.
That doesn’t mean I shouldn’t build it now.
It means I get to grow alongside it.
What I Want Seven House to Become
My goal for Seven House Creative isn’t to become an agency that simply fills a content calendar.
I want to help brands understand who they are and translate that into something people recognize, remember, and want to be part of.
That could mean refining a brand strategy.
Building a social presence.
Developing a campaign.
Creating content systems.
Or helping a business finally bring all of its ideas together into one clear direction.
I’m especially interested in the space where strategy and creativity meet.
Because I don’t think brands should have to choose between looking good and having a purpose.
The strongest ones do both.
The Beginning
Seven House is still very much at the beginning.
And I actually want this Journal to document that.
Not just the polished campaigns and final designs, but the things I’m learning along the way: brand strategy, social media, creative direction, client work, building an agency, and figuring out what kind of business I ultimately want Seven House to become.
There will be wins.
There will probably be ideas that completely flop.
There will be things I look back on six months from now and wonder why I ever did them that way.
That’s part of it.
For now, I’m building, learning, creating, and seeing where Seven House goes.
And I’m excited to share the process.
